On this service in 1856. This Estimate was brought forward to cover the expense of a drain necessary for the cleansing of part of the Tapingshan district, where a drain tainted the air, and graveyard smaller drains.
Sewers at East and West of Wongmeichung. Report and Estimate No. 12, 1853. The great demand for land for building purposes having rendered it necessary to devote for such purpose the land at the East and West of the mouth of the rivulet flowing through the Wong Nei Chung Valley, a plan was made of that locality according to which sales might be made from time to time as circumstances should require, and for the purpose of draining all this land which had to be reclaimed from the sea by filling in to a depth of nine feet it was found necessary to propose the construction of drains along each street and other subsidiary drains. The sum expended on this service in 1856 amounted to $75,200.
