During the year that has passed since this Report, the schools were generally visited during the year by one of their number, and a meeting of the Committee was held to receive the two yearly Reports of the Teachers and visitors.

These visits involve a journey during one or two days of from 25 to 40 miles, and are laborious in consequence; yet they are too infrequent to be productive of much good in the case of a teacher whose heart is not in his work.

It is not likely that under the present System of supervision, where teachers of the class [?] frequent, great results can be obtained: the Committee can look no further than to enforce, in schools presided over by Chinese Masters ignorant of English,

a due attention to the instruction of the scholars in the reading and writing of their native language, with the addition of such religious lessons, [time?] English Teacher: and the Chinese teachers as the head master himself have required and be competent to communicate [?] but in none of the schools is the reading of the Scriptures compulsory;

We have endeavoured to do what we can to make the present system of education in the Government schools as efficient as its character and circumstances allow it to be, but we rejoice at the establishment of some other better system, systems under which greater results can be realized.

We beg leave to suggest that the number of the members of the Committee of Supervision be increased by the addition
