Of the Sandwich Islanders seemed to have been peculiarly susceptible of its effects, for nearly all who came infected, which the attention of government has been anxiously directed to the origin of this disorder and the means by which it was propagated. The practice of inoculation, so general in China in Autumn, has been one of the most obvious causes of its origin. The disease has acquired intensity by the dirty and gregarious habits of the people, and the pestilential defects in the construction and situation of their dwellings. There came importation of Smallpox from California at the time it appeared to be subsiding here — I regret to say that the infamous resorts of vice so abundant in this City have, more than all other places, harboured the disease, and diffused it on the most extensive scale.
The people have been warned, by Proclamation, of the dangers of inoculation, and offered the privilege of gratuitous vaccination; they have, however, evidently not sufficiently availed themselves of the other. For future prevention the establishment of a vaccine and smallpox Hospital would be the most certain and effectual means. The vacated Missionary Hospital and school Houses on the Morrison Hill might be made available for this purpose, and an intelligent native Medical Assistant,
