Excruciating neuralgia huius referred to the branches of the first division of the fifth pair of nerves, with entire paralysis of the upper eyelid and perfect amaurosis. Both cases were cured by small doses of quinine and arsenic. In another instance there were attacks of pain in the throat, with a cough and respiration resembling croup. The attacks of dyspnea nearly ended in suffocation. The circulation of carbonized blood through the brain, in consequence of imperfect respiration, produced violent delirium, or mania. These symptoms recurred every twenty-four hours, were preceded by chills of two hours' duration and terminated in profuse perspiration. There appeared to me lesion of the facial nerve in this case. [Page 74] As in other cases the specific efficacy of quinine and arsenic in small doses was shown in this.
Although very few cases of Small-pox appear in the records of the Civil Hospital, this disorder has been a serious epidemic in the Colony during the last autumn. Among Europeans the disease has been unusually mild, modified, no doubt, by early vaccination, their immunity from cutaneous diseases, and the more salubrious circumstances of their abodes. Among the Chinese the mortality from Small-pox has been very excessive, but most so amongst the Indian and African tribes, the natives
