All, and the suggestions of various parties (if followed) to add to the ventilation, to alter one part or remove another, would entail endless trouble.
The Trustees appointed under Minute No 22 of 1847 suggest every improvement at the Building, and to their suggestions I have agreed to throw the apse (which was formerly intended for the vestry) into the Church. The main east wall was built with an archway complete to provide for this if necessary. It will perhaps add to the general appearance of the church, but it is unusual. I believe it is usual to see the communion table without any immediately behind it. I hope to be able to report that Service can be performed therein in July next.
The Sundry contingent works to Buildings during the year have cost £401. 19. 8.
Under this head in the Town is comprised the Sewers and surface channels & gutters, for the former an expenditure of £582. 14. - has been made under Report and Estimate No 211 of 1844, for the latter £958.2.4. under Report and Estimate 12/3 of 1845.
These services have been of vast importance and benefit to the several localities in which they have been executed, and if under the inspection of the Police the Inhabitants are compelled to use and keep them clean the most beneficial results must accrue.
The Streets in the Town I can hardly give any satisfactory data upon regarding the expense of keeping them in repair as the side channels have not been completed, but in three parts where they have been, the expense has been inconsiderable and executed by convict labour at an average charge of 8d per yard for the year.
The contracts entered into for the formation of these channels included the repair and reformation of the Streets which is the reason I am unable to give the sum under the head of repairs for the whole of the Streets.
