The repairs to the wooden Bridges in the Mongneichung Valley have been very considerable this year, and I much regret I built wooden Bridges here also, but with regard to the main Bridge of two Spans of 30 feet each without great expense forming the approaches I could not have built stone arches, and this in conjunction with the arches themselves would have trebled the cost of the Bridge, but the same does not apply to smaller Bridges where stone might have been used at an advance upon the original cost of Construction.
Upon two Bridges here the greatest expense was not with the wood work or planking but as a further protection to the stone foundations which were undermined during the heavy rains; these required repairs, and to the large Bridge an additional two-inch plank was placed on the platform for the prevention of accidents, as these timbers occasionally snapped asunder without showing externally any apparent cause or symptoms of decay. This service amounted to £66.13.2 and £55 to them.
Road Wongreichung to Saison. This Road extends a distance of 5 miles, much of it along the sea shore and much exposed to the run of the tides and thus sustains at times of high water spring tides and heavy weather considerable damage. Injury to this Road is also frequently caused by the neglect of the quarrymen in the neighbourhood who stop up the drains and channels with the débris from the quarries, and this in conjunction with the excessive quantity of the same material washed down from the hills during rains render this line, although almost level, the most expensive one in the ...
