1931-1939

Published Reports

The series of annual separate reports that began in 1890 (published by the House of Commons from 1890 to 1919, and by HMSO from 1920 to 1930) with the title of 'Annual Report' continued from 1931 to 1939 but with a different title. Henceforth they were entitled 'Annual Report on the Social and Economic Progress of the People of Hong Kong'. However, they were still part of the series of annual colonial reports and the numerical sequence continued. Below are the references for the published reports in the 1930s. The reference given is for the volumes that are to be found in the Official Publications Room of Cambridge Unviersity library - as mentioned above, these references would not apply to copies located in other copyright libraries.

Unpublished Report

With the beginning of the Second World War in September 1939, the Colonial Office decided that no more colonial annual reports should be issued until the end of the war. For most colonies, the 1938 report was the last one in this series; but the 1939 report for Hong Kong does exist in proof form, and can be found in Cambridge University Library. It has been included in this collection, the reference number being given below. Because it was never published, there is no series number allocated to it. 1939 Colonial Reports-Annual:-

1940-1941/2

After December 1939, the period for all administration reports changed from the calendar year (1st January to 31st December) to the financial year (1st April to 31st March). Therefore, the next reports after 1939 covered the period January 1940 to March 1941, a period of 15 months. No composite Annual Report on the administration of Hong Kong (or for any colony) was written during the war years, but we do have various
