21″ thick. Tenders for the supply of mild steel pipes and specials were called for locally and in Great Britain and an order therefor was placed through the Crown Agents in November with Messrs. Newport and South Wales Tube Company for the sum of £15,277. 17s. 4d. Other orders placed through the Crown Agents at the same time were:-Sluice valves and flexible joints with Messrs. Glenfield and Kennedy costing £830. 9s. 0d., flexible tubing with Messrs. United Flexible Tubing Ltd. costing £26. 3s. 7d., and pipe cutting machine with Messrs. Weston & Company costing £182. 4s. 5d.
(b) Formation of Bed:-About the middle of September after the line of the mains was decided, detail survey of the land stations was made; this was followed by a close hydrographic survey over the area to be occupied by the mains. The formation levels for the bed of the mains were then agreed and a commencement was made with the dredging of the foundation trench by Government Grab Dredger No. 2 on the 19th October. This craft was assisted by Government Grab Dredger No. 1 from the 1st December and at the end of the year, the total spoil excavated amounted to 9,953 cubic yards. Contract drawings and documents were prepared and tenders were called for at the end of the year.

Distribution, Island:-The following works were carried out:-190 feet of 15″ cast iron main were laid in Hennessy Road on the new alignment at the junction of Arsenal Street connecting up with the 12″ main in Queen's Road, and 707 feet of 4″ cast iron main were laid in Castle Road replacing an old 3″ main.
