The mainland supply was treated with 8.6 tons of liquid chlorine which is equivalent to an average admixture of 0.575 of a part per million.
The analyses made by the Government Analyst showed that the water was of good quality.
At the end of the year 117 public stand pipes, 159 pedestal hydrants and 352 single underground street fire hydrants were in use.
A measurement of all trunk and distribution mains and back lane pipes of 2″ upwards was made, the position at the end of the year is given in Table XIII.
House services were constructed, altered, or repaired in 5,164 instances and twenty-three supplies were connected for building purposes. In addition 12,763 house service inspections were carried out.
Particulars of the quantity of water supplied by meters are given in Table IX, the total amount being 2,189.48 million gallons, 65.0% of the total consumption was therefore accounted for by meters compared with 66.0% in 1936. After making allowance for unmetered supplies through public stand pipes, cleaning filter beds, mains and services, meter slip, fires etc. it is estimated that 73.7% of the total consumption has been accounted for. The balance is mainly due to losses in the distribution system. A certain amount of experimental waste detection work was carried out and proposals for the establishment of a permanent waste detection branch were submitted to Government.

82. Water Meters:-There were 9,774 meters in use at the close of the year as compared with 9,509 in 1936. The number of meters examined and repaired was 4,385 and six meters were tested in accordance with Regulation 9 of the Water Works Ordinance 16 of 1903.

83. Maintenance of Praya Walls and Piers:-Praya walls and piers were maintained in a satisfactory condition. Repairs were carried out to the following:-Hung Hom Ferry, Jordan Road Ferry, Hung Hom Store, Mong Kok Ferry, and Kowloon Point Public Piers, and also at the Government Slipway, Yaumati and three Refuse Boat Piers. Five hoists at Jordan Road and Mong Kok Ferry Piers were maintained in good order.
