EVENTS OF THE YEAR.
22. Owing to the unsettled conditions in China during the latter part of 1937, there was a marked influx of both Chinese and Europeans to the more secure confines of the Colony, accompanied by a sharp rise in the attendance figures of educational institutions. The maximum enrolment in all classes of schools reached the record figure of 86,993.
23. In connection with the Coronation of His Majesty King George VI, celebrations were held throughout the Colony in May, and every pupil in attendance at a registered school was presented at the expense of Government with a memorial medal.
24. The new building of Maryknoll Convent School was opened informally in May and Heep Yan School commenced its activities after Chinese New Year in February.
25. During the summer holidays the Central British School building was taken over by the Refugees Committee and utilized as a hostel for European families who had been evacuated from the disturbed zone in North China. Some delay was experienced in re-habilitating the premises in time for the re-opening of the Autumn term which had to be postponed until a fortnight after the arranged date.
26. The appointment from England of a Biology mistress for Belilios Public School marks a step in the progress of Science teaching to Chinese girls. The experiment thus commenced is important and its development will be observed with great interest.

LEGISLATION, ADMINISTRATION AND CONTROL.
27. The Hong Kong University School Certificate Examination was held in June for the last time, and the Hong Kong School Certificate Examination was successfully inaugurated. General satisfaction with the organisation and results of the latter has been expressed by the Government and Grant-in-Aid Schools which participated.
