61. The average sterling exchange value for the year was 1/3 as against an estimated figure of 1/8. The rate opened at 1/3¼ and closed at 1/2¼ the highest point being 1/3¾ in April and May. It is pleasing to note that although the estimates for the year were based on an exchange figure of 1/8, savings were made on Personal Emoluments and Other Charges to the extent of $70,148.68.
62. The exchange rate between Canton and Hong Kong fluctuated considerably during the year. The rate opened at 129.50 and closed at 157, the highest and lowest points touched being 128.60 in January and 198 in July. The average for the year was 152.49. The British Section's share of sectional through receipts was based on a transaction rate of 145 and this operated against the British Section for 10 months of the year.
