Q 90

Small Scale Maps.-Sheets Nos. 10, 11, 14, 15, 19 and 23 of the 20,000 topographic map of the Colony were revised at the request of the Military Authorities.

CONTOUR SURVEYS AND LEVELLING.

32. The report on the Levelling of Hong Kong (1929-1934) with values of bench marks was printed and published during the year.

Two large areas in the New Territories-136 acres at Kam Tsin and 280 acres at Ha Tsun-were grid-levelled at 150 feet intervals and at closer intervals where necessary. A further area of forty-two acres at Ha Tsun was contoured (vertical interval 20 ft.). Double levelling was carried out from the nearest bench marks, which, in the case of the site at Ha Tsun, was two miles distant. Both surveys were plotted to a scale of 32 ins. to 1 mile.

Contour surveys of forty-one acres at Tsun Wan and three acres at Little Hong Kong were made and plotted (scale, vertical interval 10 ft. in each case).

The 500 ft. contour was set out on the ground to define the eastern boundary of New Kowloon Cemetery No. 7.

All bench marks in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Kowloon were inspected during the year. It was discovered that, owing to theft, several of them had been removed. Seventeen of them have been re-instated and re-instatement of the remainder is proceeding. A new method of fixing staple bench marks has been devised which, it is hoped, will prove more successful.

Hong Kong, 1937.
