PUBLIC WORKS EXTRAORDINARY.

The following is a summary of works carried out under this vote:-

HONG KONG.

BUILDINGS.

118. Queen Mary Hospital:-This work was referred to in paragraph 102 of last year's Report.

Main Hospital Block-The work proceeded satisfactorily and at the end of the year the building was nearing completion.

Nursing Staff Quarters-The work proceeded satisfactorily and the building was completed on 31st December.

Hospital Servants Quarters-The contract proceeded satisfactorily and the work was completed on 15th July.

Two Blocks of Flats for European Subordinate Officers and Chinese Medical Officers-The contract proceeded satisfactorily and the work was completed on 19th November.

A Block of Three Flats for European Medical Officers-The contract for the approach road, site formation and foundations was satisfactorily completed on 15th April. A contract for the erection of the superstructure was let to Messrs. Hop Cheong & Co. and work was commenced on 20th April. Good progress was made with the work and, at the end of the year, the building was nearing completion.

The provision of a filtered water supply involved tapping the City High Level system and laying a pipe line 8,551 feet in length to a new service reservoir situated on the hillside behind the Hospital. From this reservoir distribution to the various hospital blocks is effected and fire protection provided.

The supply main commences at the 750 feet level service reservoir above Po Shan Road and for the greater part of its length follows the line of the Pokfulum Conduit.

The pipe line consists of forty-six feet of 8" spun iron piping, 3,346 feet of 6" spun iron piping and 5,159 feet of 4" wrought iron piping and was completed in November.

The new service reservoir was constructed by Messrs. Kin Lee & Co., Waterworks Maintenance Contractor. Work was started in August and completed early in December. The reservoir has a capacity of 102,000 gallons and is divided into two sections by a mass concrete division wall. The side walls
