60. Maintenance of City and Hill District Water Works-The year opened with the supply restricted to fifteen hours per day (6 a.m.-9 p.m.) and with the exception of three days at Chinese New Year 22nd-24th January, when a constant supply was given, this supply remained in force until 31st January. From 1st February until 22nd May a ten hours supply was given, the periods of supply being 6-11 a.m. and 4-9 p.m. but on 23rd May a fifteen hours supply (6 a.m.-9 p.m.) was reverted to. Early in August the Jubilee Reservoir began to fill rapidly and from 5th August until the close of the year a constant supply was maintained.

In order to relieve the overflow at Tytam Tuk Reservoir sluice gates have been installed near the outfall of the Tytam Tuk Catchwater, which enable the catchwater discharge to be diverted from the reservoir whenever considered necessary. Further particulars of this work will be found in paragraph 231 of this Report.

Early in the year Tytam Reservoir overflow cill was lowered by 2′-9″ which reduced the capacity of the reservoir by 23.00 million gallons. Considerable leakage occurred at the main dam and in view of the pending completion of the Jubilee Reservoir this precautionary measure was considered advisable.

The mainland supply was in operation from January 1st to 31st and from May 23rd to December 31st a total of 254 days. During these periods 789.23 million gallons were delivered into the Gardens Service Reservoir, equivalent to an average daily supply of 3.11 million gallons.

During the typhoon on August 17th a length of the 18″ cross harbour main was carried away by a ship's anchor. Repair work was commenced on 31st August and completed on 19th September. This is the first occasion on which either pipe has suffered damage from a dragging anchor.

The total quantity of water stored in the impounding reservoirs on 1st January amounted to 1,775.11 million gallons, of which 525.16 million gallons were in the gravitation reservoirs and 1,249.95 million gallons in the lower-level reservoirs requiring pumping. Storage reached a minimum on the 18th May when the total was 740.10 million gallons, 197.71 million gallons being in the gravitation reservoirs.
