PUBLIC WORKS EXTRAORDINARY.
The following is a summary of works carried out under this vote:-
HONG KONG.
BUILDINGS,
102. Queen Mary Hospital:-This work was referred to in paragraph 103 of last year's Report as the New Government Civil Hospital.
The work on site formation was continued and completed satisfactorily on 2nd March.
Main Hospital Block-The erection of the steel frame was completed during April and, after tenders had been obtained, a contract was signed in May with Messrs. Kin Lee & Co. for the superstructure. Good progress was made with this work and at the end of the year the carcase of the building was almost completed. Tenders were obtained for the Heating and Plumbing and the work was awarded to Messrs. G. N. Haden & Sons.
Nursing Staff Quarters-As in the case of the Main Block the Crown Agents obtained tenders for the supply of the steel frame in England and local tenders were obtained for its erection. A contract was signed for this work with Messrs. Kin Lee & Co. in February and it was completed satisfactorily in July. Tenders were also obtained for the superstructure and the work awarded to the same firm. Good progress was made and at the end of the year the carcase of the building was almost completed.
Hospital Servants Quarters-Sketch plans were prepared for a building of three-stories containing accommodation for dressers and servants. A contract for this building was let to Messrs. Sang Tai & Co. and signed on 22nd July. At the end of the year the reinforced concrete frame had been completed to first-floor level.
Two Blocks of Flats for European Subordinate Officers and Chinese Medical Officers--Sketch plans were prepared for two buildings of three-stories, each comprising six flats. All the flats are self-contained with four rooms, kitchen, pantry and bathroom, and are provided with the usual servants quarters. A contract for this building was let to Messrs. Kin Lee & Co. and signed on 17th October. The work was proceeding satisfactorily at the end of the year.
