Maintenance of Telephones including all Cables: --The whole system of communication including submarine and land cables and aerial routes, telegraph lines and instruments and office intercommunicating systems were maintained in good order. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, etc.:-Sewers, storm water drains and trained nullahs generally were cleansed, repaired and maintained in good condition, the open nullahs and channels in the City of Victoria and in the Shaukiwan district being cleansed by the Sanitary Department. Automatic flushing tanks were operated during periods of low tide. Sand deposits were cleared as they occurred. Septic tanks at Lugard Road, Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay and F. L's. 29 and 30 Pokfulum were periodically sludged. All metal work in connection with the various drainage systems was inspected, and, where found necessary, repaired and tarred. Defective traps, gullies, gratings, etc., were renewed.

Gas Lighting, City and Suburbs and Hill District:- The total number of lamps in use at the end of the year in the City and its precincts was 1,807, an increase of eighteen over the figures for the previous year, and in Hill District, 232, an increase of one as compared with the previous year. A new contract was entered with the Hong Kong & China Gas Company to renew the public lighting for a further period of five years commencing from 1st July, 1935.

In the interests of economy an arrangement was made with the Hong Kong & China Gas Company that, throughout the year, a number of lamps, 103 in all, in Barker Road, Belchers Street, Bluff Path, Chatham Path, Craigmin Road, Gough Hill Road, Kotewall Road, May Road, Magazine Gap Road, Monmouth Path, Po Shan Road, Peak Road, Victoria Road and Watson Road, were extinguished at midnight instead of at the times specified in the Gas Street Lighting Agreement.

53. Electric Lighting, City, Hill District and Shaukiwan:— Traffic Control Lights, in City, seventy-five in number, and traffic island lights, twenty-four in number, were maintained in working order.
