REPORT OF THE GENERAL POST OFFICE, HONG KONG, FOR THE YEAR 1934.

(A) POST OFFICE.

STAFF.

Mr. M. J. Breen resumed duty as Postmaster General from 22nd February.

MAILS, REGISTERED ARTICLES AND PARCELS.

2. Full details are shown in Tables I, II and III.

3. An air mail service to Australia was opened on 8th December. The mail is despatched from Hong Kong by steamer to connect at Singapore with the weekly service of the Singapore-Australia Air Mail Line. The average time of transit Hong Kong to Port Darwin is seven days.

4. The flow of parcels to and from China, United States of America, Indo-China and Japan showed increases but decreases were recorded for Great Britain and India.

REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE.

5. Tables IV and V show comparative figures for 1933 and 1934 under separate subheads and Table VI comparative totals for the past ten years.

6. The balance of postage revenue over expenditure charged against the departmental vote was $745,111.

7. Reductions in the letter rate to places within the British Empire, air mail rates to Europe and intermediate countries, and parcel post rates to Great Britain were made during the year.

8. Tables VII and VIII provide details relating to the sale of postage stamps.

MONEY ORDER OFFICE.

9. The combined totals of the year's transactions on Money Orders and British Postal Orders shows a decrease of about £23,570 as compared with the figures for 1933. The decrease is mainly due to the introduction of direct Money Order exchange between China and India, and the consequent discontinuance of the use of the Hong Kong Service as intermediary.
