232. Second Cross Harbour Pipe:-(a) Materials.-This work was referred to in paragraph 239 of last year's Report. The designs for the pipe line were completed early in the year and tenders for the supply of the materials were called for both through the Crown Agents and from local contractors. All examination of the tenders revealed the fact that such of the required materials as could be obtained locally resulted in a considerable saving in cost and accordingly a contract for the pipe work was awarded locally to Messrs. Hume Pipe (Far East), Ltd., for £7,309 19s. 5d. on 17th August. Work was commenced on 27th August and by the end of the year all the materials under this contract were practically ready for delivery. The remainder of the materials including stop valves, testing hose, and flexible joints were ordered through the Crown Agents. The valves and testing hose arrived in the Colony during the year. Delays occurred in the manufacture of the flexible joints, none of which arrived before the end of the year.
(b) Fabrication of Pipes:-Tenders for fabricating the short pipe lengths into lengths of about 100 feet were called for from local welding firms and the work was entrusted to Messrs. Hume Pipe (Far East), Ltd., at an estimated cost of $8,536.00. Good progress was made with the work.
(c) Laying of Pipe:-A contract for this work was let to Messrs. The Netherlands Harbour Works on 2nd November for $44,990.00 but owing to the non-arrival of the necessary flexible joints ordered from England through the Crown Agents the actual work of laying was not commenced.

Ferry Pier Scheme:-This work was referred to in paragraph 255 of last year's Report. A contract was let to Messrs. The Netherlands Harbour Works Company on 16th April, 1934, for the construction of six reinforced concrete caissons. The caissons were made, sunk in position at Jubilee Street Pier and completed to final levels in November.
Money changers' shops, book-stalls and telephone booths were constructed at Jubilee Street and Jordan Road Ferry Piers.

234. New Gaol at Stanley:-This work was referred to in paragraph 235 of last year's Report. The site formation contract proceeded satisfactorily during the year and was completed on 6th December. Tenders for most of the prison buildings within and including the boundary wall together with drainage and surfacing to compound were called for during November and that of Messrs. Tung Shan & Co. amounting to $1,339,861.34 was accepted. The necessary procedure for the depositing of
