NEW KOWLOON.

80. Maintenance of Buildings:-Government buildings were kept in a good state of repair. Painting, colourwashing and repairs in accordance with the recurring programme were carried out to eight buildings. Major repairs included the following:-Lai Chi Kok Prison—renewed stairs and bridge, Pei Ho Street Sanitary Office—reinstated on evacuation, Kowloon City Police Station—renewed roofing to Indians Quarters, Field Cottage external painting, etc., Kowloon Tong and Lai Chi Kok—renewed typhoon symbols. Kowloon City Police Station—renewed yard surface and general repairs, Lai Chi Kok Prison—repaired channels and fencing.

Electrical installations were maintained in good order. 147 fans and three fan motors were completely rewound and six radiators fitted with new elements. 343 points in eighteen Government buildings were tested and repaired and two inventories of electrical fittings issued. Lai Chi Kok Temporary Prison was wired for electric lights and the installation of a fence alarm system in the Prison Addition was completed. Mong Kok Police Station installation was rewired and at Kowloon City Police Station repairs were carried out to defective wiring. Additions and alterations were carried out to Shamshuipo Market.

Improvements to Buildings:-The principal improvements carried out under this heading were:-Shamshuipo Market—removed stalls and alterations, Lai Chi Kok Female Prison—new ironing tables, Shamshuipo Police Station—alterations to Indians Barrack Room, Kowloon City Police Station—new concrete garage.

Expenditure $2,038.62

82. Roads and Bridges (Maintenance and Improvements):-The surfaces of approximately eighty-three miles of roads were maintained in a satisfactory condition.
