Seventy-six ball hydrants were converted to spring hydrants. With the exception of a few ball hydrants purposely left to act as air valves all underground hydrants are now of the spring type.
A measurement of all distribution mains of 3" diameter and upwards has been made, the position at the end of the year was as follows:- 3"-4,000 feet, 4"-43,000 feet, 5"-7,000 feet, 6"-79,000 feet, 7"-3,000 feet, 8"-23,000 feet, 10"-6,000 feet, 12"-32,000 feet, 15"-5,000 feet, 18"-15,000 feet, 24"-25,000 feet, making a total of 242,000 feet or 45.7 miles.
The various buildings were kept in a good state of repair.
House services were constructed, altered or repaired in 3,700 instances and forty-three supplies were laid on for building purposes.
Particulars of the quantity of water supplied by meters are given in Table IX, the total amount being 1,500.45 million gallons. 68.7% of the total consumption has therefore been accounted for by meters compared with 60.1% in 1933.

Water Meters:- There were 8,944 meters in use at the close of the year as compared with 8,156 in 1933. The number of meters examined and repaired was 2,496 of which fourteen were tested in accordance with Regulation 9 of the Water Works Ordinance 16 of 1903.

77. Maintenance of Praya Walls and Piers:- Praya Walls and Piers were maintained in a satisfactory condition. Repairs were carried out to the following piers: Jordan Road, Mong Kok Tsui, Waterloo Road and Yaumati Slipway. Minor repairs were effected to sea walls at various points.

79. Maintenance of Recreation Grounds:- The various grounds were maintained in good condition. Departmental gangs were employed for the purpose of mowing grass, cleaning ditches, etc.
