Improvements to Buildings.-The principal improvements carried out under this heading were as follows:-Hung Hom Police Station-alterations to Native latrines, Yaumati Police Chamber-metal guards to windows, Tsim Tsa Tsui Police Station-the enclosing of Charge Room verandahs and provision of a new garage, Yaumati Police Station-conversion of cattle compound into garage, Reclamation St. Market-new kitchen, Royal Observatory-new fence and rails for typhoon symbols, Kowloon Hospital-wrought iron grills to sixteen windows, Yaumati School-alterations to entrance gates, Ma Tau Kok Cattle Depot-flyproof screens to Quarters, Yaumati Old Market-alterations to stalls, Kowloon Fire Station-Provision of a covered way to stairs and screens to dormitories, Mong Kok Fire Station-alterations and additions, Mong Kok Police Station-alterations to cooking stoves.

Water storage tanks were installed under this heading in the following buildings:-Central British School, Kowloon Junior School and Yaumati Government School.

Improvements and additions to electric lighting were carried out in eight buildings; the total number of points involved. Electric bells were installed at the Police Training School and Kowloon Junior School. Four telephones were installed at Yaumati Slipway, Royal Observatory, and the Detective Office, and a cabinet was erected at Kowloon Hospital.

67. Roads and Bridges (Maintenance and Improvements).—The surfaces of approximately 53 miles of roads were maintained in a satisfactory condition.

The following are particulars of the additional areas laid with improved surfacing during the year:
