58. Maintenance of Praya Walls and Piers.-The Praya Walls and Piers were maintained in a satisfactory condition throughout the year. Extensive repairs were carried out to the following piers:-Blake, Harbour Department, King Shan, Sai Wan Ho, Shaukiwan, Tonnochy Road, Western Market and Wilmer Street. 62. Dredging Foreshores.-During the year, No. 1 Grab Dredger worked 302 days and was under repair 1st to 11th September, and 16th November to 17th December (forty-three days). The cost of repairs and replacements amounted to $5,261.90. The dredger removed 35,004.47 cubic yards of silt at a cost of 56 cents per cubic yard, which includes the cost of transporting and depositing the dredged materials but excludes depreciation. The No. 2 Grab Dredger worked 318 days and was under repairs 18th to 20th September, and 15th November to 5th December (twenty-nine days). The cost of repairs and replacements amounted to $2,907.20. The dredger removed 38,982.96 cubic yards of silt at an all-in cost of 49 cents per cubic yard, which includes the cost of transporting and depositing the dredged materials but excludes depreciation. All the dredged materials were dumped at Sung Wong Toi. Of the total of 73,987.45 cubic yards of silt removed during the year, 45,138.01 cubic yards were dredged from the foreshores and in maintaining the depth of water within the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter and alongside Public Piers and Refuse Boat Piers; 13,594.02 cubic yards, 11,266.8 cubic yards and 2,330.6 cubic yards were dredged in connection with the excavation of trenches for jetty and slipway foundations at Kai Tak Aerodrome, and for sea-wall foundations at Kennedy Town and North Point, respectively, the cost being charged against Advance Account (Aerodrome), and Head 34, P.W.E. Sub-heads 47 and 45, respectively; while the remainder of 1,658.02 cubic yards was dredged on behalf of The Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock Co., Ltd., and the Naval Authorities.
