79. The foreign goods earnings were $31,057.67 as compared with $37,107.35 for the previous year. Considering the vast amount of cargo moving between the two big cities, these very poor figures are a matter of serious concern to the Administration of the two Sections.
80. The income from rents increased from $6,512.29 to $8,037.65.
81. Under subhead R.10, Auxiliary Operation, Foreign Haulage, the receipts were $5,206.80 less than 1930.
82. The express services were maintained 353 days out of the 365, or 5 days less than the previous year. From January 1st to April 20th the rate of haulage was $1.10 per mile, but on resumption of traffic after the accident, when the new tender locomotives were put into service, the haulage rate was reduced to $1.00 per mile as provided for in the Locomotive Agreement.
83. The total Operating Expenses amounted to $945,004.01. The salaries of the Junior Clerical Staff were as usual not provided for in the Railway Estimate of Working Expenses, but grouped with those of other Government Departments under the head of Junior Clerical Service. This item of expenditure is however included in the total Operating Expenses, as are all Railway expenses whether provided for in the Railway Estimate or otherwise.
84. The Disbursements against the estimate of Working Expenses amounted to $769,034.02, including Running Expenses of Government Motor Cars and Lorries. The salaries of the Junior Clerical Service amounted to $39,737.11, and the portion of Special Expenditure chargeable to Revenue to $36,098.97. Further items amounting to $43,260.88 were included in respect of services rendered and materials supplied by other Government Departments, also payments made by the Railway not provided for in the Railway Estimates but charged to Government votes.
85. The vote for supervision of Government Motor Cars and Lorries at Kowloon attached to the Railway, is included in the Railway estimate of Other Charges merely as a convenience, but the cost is not included in the final Operating Expenses.
