berth and reclamation on the South side of Jordan Road, Kow-loon. The group of piers on the Hong Kong side will accom-modate one vehicles ferry vessel and four passenger ferry vessels berthing simultaneously, in addition there will be a timber wharf on the West side of the reclamation and one side of the existing Queen Victoria Street pier, the latter two berths to accommodate the fire float and craft under the Superintendent of Imports and Exports. The reclamation to be carried out in connection with this scheme of berthage will be upwards of one acre in extent. The reclamation under construction in connection with the vehicles ferry berth on the South side of Jordan Road is upwards of two acres in extent and abuts on the western boundary of the Ad-miralty Oil Depot.
300. The Contract for the contruction of the works on the Hong Kong side was awarded to Messrs. the Lam Construction Co. and construction was commenced in January. All the rein-forced concrete piles required, numbering 211 and ranging from sixty-three to eighty-eight feet in length, were manufactured during the year, of this number 146 had actually been driven in the works at the end of the year. During the typhoon which occurred on 1st August, twelve of the piles which had been driven including a group of eight piles for supporting the shore end of the vehicles ramp were damaged. The Contractor was required to draw the damaged piles and replace them at his own expense. The construction of timber wharf was completed and put into commission during March. Upwards of 30,000 cube yards of granite rubble were deposited to form the foundations to the sea wall to be built seven to twelve feet back from the inner line of piles in the reinforced concrete wharfage. The sewer in Queen Victoria Street was diverted along Connaught Road and led to the Pottinger Street storm water drain, the short length of the latter between the point of junction and the Praya wall becoming a combined outfall.
301. The construction of the reclamation and wharfage at Jordan Road was commenced in February, good progress was made with this work. The whole of the piles numbering ninety-three were driven to form the vehicles ferry berth, of the ninety-three piles eighty-seven are reinforced concrete the remainder broad flange beams. About 17,000 cube yards of granite rubble were deposited around and at the back of the piles to form the foundations of the reclamation sea wall. About 72,000 cube yards of filling for the reclamation had been deposited at the end of the year.
