207. Reinstatement of Government Walls.-Under this head the work of rebuilding a portion of the wall at Jardine's Corner was undertaken. A contract was let to Messrs. Sang Lee & Co. on 1st April 1931 for a sum of $3,699.00, and the work was practically completed on 30th June.

208. Mental Hospital, Provision of Geysers.-Seven geysers (four in the European Block and three in the Chinese Block) to provide hot water to baths were provided. Work was commenced at the end of March and completed in May.

209. Garage at Arbuthnot Road. This work consisted of the erection of a garage block to accommodate the Prison Van and motor cycles. A contract was let to Messrs. Tak Hing & Co. for $5,650.00 on the 23rd of October and the structural work was completed by the end of the year.

210. North Point Balance Tank.-Slight settlement at the North West corner of the Reservoir having occurred, piling and under-pinning were carried out. Owing to delay in obtaining possession of the strip of land on which to lay the 12" supply main this work was not completed until the end of the year; the length of the main is 662 feet.

211. New Principal Mains in City.-The total length of water mains laid during the year was 6,322 feet varying in diameter from 4" to 12". The principal lengths were laid in Shaukiwan Road between the Hong Kong Electric Company's Works and Ming Yuen Street (1,566 feet of 12″ main); in Queen's Road East between Ship Street and Wanchai Market (1,308 feet of 10" main); and in Warren Street and up new Tai Hang Motor Road (1,143 feet of 6″ main).

212. New 8" Connecting Main to Shaukiwan.-This work was completed before the close of the year. 5,788 feet of 8″ C.I. piping have been laid between Ming Yuen Street and Sai Wan Ho Market, there now being a continuous 8″ main between these points. The old Shaukiwan Filter Beds which were antiquated and liable to contamination were discarded in August, since when the Sai Wan Ho district has been supplied with water from the Eastern Filter Beds.
