183. Maintenance of Telephones. The lines and instruments were maintained in good order.

164. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, &c. The sewers, stormwater drains, and trained nullahs were cleansed, repaired, and maintained in good condition, the open channels and nullahs being cleansed by the Sanitary Department. Sand deposits, as they accumulated, were removed. All metal work in connection with the drainage systems was inspected, and, where found necessary, repaired and tarred. Repairs were effected to sewer at Un Chau Street at seaward end of street between N.K.I.L's. 443 and 401 Cheung Sha Wan Road, and to the upper half of 15" storm water drains in Fuk Wa Street and Cheung Sha Wan Road at the junction with Yen Chow Street.

165. Gas and Electric Lighting. The number of electric street lamps in use at the end of the year, was 426, an increase of three over the previous year.

166. Extensions of Lighting. Two additional electric street lamps were installed during the year.

167. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages. Following the typhoons repairs of varying magnitude were necessary to eleven Government buildings. Damage to electric light wires and aerial telephone lines at Lai Chi Kok and Tai Kok Tsui was made good. Sand and silt were removed from: stormwater drain, Tai Po Road between Nan Chang Street nullah and Shek Kip Mei Valley stream courses; stormwater drain, Tong Mi Road near Nathan Road; stormwater drain at N.K.I.L. 421 Castle Peak Road; stormwater drain in Yen Chow Street.

168. The following works suffered slight damages:- Female Prison Site, Lai Chi Kok, Castle Peak Road Widening Section from Cheung Sha Wan to Lai Chi Kok, Access Road to Christian Chinese Cemetery, Kowloon City, Matshed Store at Kai Tak Air Port, but repairs were completed by the end of the year. Damage was also caused to the following structures:- Kowloon City Pier and Granite Rubble Pitching at Lai Chi Kok Water Boat Dock. They were repaired by the end of the year.

169. Maintenance of Water Works, Lai Chi Kok. The total quantity of water supplied during the year was 104.33 million gallons showing an increase of 4.29 million gallons over 1930 and an average consumption of 286,000 gallons per day. Details of consumption are given in Table VIII.
