155. Water Account (Meters &c.). There were 5,696 meters in use at the close of the year as compared with 4,426 in 1930. The number of meters examined and repaired during the year was 1,120, of which twenty-three were tested in accordance with Regulation 9 of the Water Works Ordinance 16 of 1902

156. Maintenance of Praya Walls and Piers. The Praya Walls and Piers were maintained in a satisfactory condition. Excluding typhoon damage to Praya Walls and Piers referred to elsewhere, the following piers required fairly extensive repairs—Hung Hom, Kowloon Point, Kowloon Canton Railway Pier, Public Square Street. Minor repairs were carried out to the remainder of the Government piers.

157. Maintenance of Chinese Cemeteries. Work carried out under this head is alluded to in paragraph 334 of this Report.

158. Maintenance of Recreation Grounds. The various grounds were maintained in good condition. Departmental gangs were employed for the purpose of mowing grass, cleaning ditches, etc.

159. Maintenance of Buildings. Government buildings were kept in a good state of repair. Painting, colourwashing and repairs in accordance with the recurring programme carried out to four buildings.

160. Improvements to Buildings. Only small improvements to a few buildings were carried out under this vote.
161. Roads and Bridges (Maintenance and Improvements). The surfaces of approximately eighty-three miles of roads were generally maintained in a satisfactory condition.
162. The following are particulars of the additional areas laid with improved surfacing during the year:
