76. Maintenance of Telephones including All Cables. The lines and instruments were maintained in good order. Alterations and improvements were effected to various existing lines.

77. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, &c. The sewers, stormwater drains, and trained nullahs generally were cleansed, repaired and maintained in good condition, the open nullahs and channels in the City of Victoria and in the Shaukiwan district being cleansed by the Sanitary Department. The automatic flushing tanks were operated during periods of low tide. Sand deposits were cleared as they occurred. The Septic Tanks at Lugard Road, Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay, near R.B.L. 137, Pokfulam Road, and at F.I's. 29 and 30, Pokfulam, were periodically sludged. All metal work in connection with the various drainage systems was inspected, and, where found necessary, repaired and tarred.
78. Repairs were also effected to sewers, stormwater drains, nullahs, &c., the most important being to those situated as shown below:-

the junction of Wongnei-chong Road and Broadwood Road near Ventris Road; in front of No. 97 Wongneichong Road; at rear of No. 33 Wing Fung Street.
Nullahs.
below No. 8 Bridge, Pokfu-lam; in Robinson Road near I.L. 713 "Rocklands"; at the junction of Hollywood Road and Old Bailey; and below Matilda Hospital, Mount Kellett.
nullah; Shek Tong Tsui nullah from Pokfulam Road to Hatton Road; invert of nullah between Tregunter Mansions and Friston Cottage, May Road.
79. Many defective traps, gullies, gratings, etc. were renewed, and a number of old disused drains of various sizes and types destroyed and filled in.

80. Gas Lighting, City and Suburbs and Hill District.—The total number of lamps in use at the end of the year in the City and its precincts was 1,708, an increase of one as compared with the previous year, and in Hill District 230, the same as last year.
81. In the interests of economy an arrangement was made with the Hong Kong and China Gas Co. that as from 1st November a number of lamps, ninety-nine in all, in Chatham Path, Craigmin Road, Kotewall Road, Magazine Gap Road,
