The number of houses and other buildings (excepting Government buildings) completed during the decade 1912 to 1921 was 4,228 of which 3,601 were domestic and 627 non-domestic buildings an average of 422 per annum. During the decade 1922 to 1931 the total number of buildings completed was 11,280, of which 10,295 were domestic (1,605 European type and 8,690 Chinese) and 985 non-domestic buildings an average of 1,128 per annum. In 1931 there was a total of 1,481 buildings completed, of which 1,376 were domestic (232 European type and 1,144 Chinese) and 105 non-domestic buildings. The total number of Government buildings in 1911 was approximately two hundred, in 1921 three hundred and in 1931 five hundred.
17. The approximate total mileage of roads in 1914 was 172 miles, in 1921 the total mileage was 215 and in 1931 the total reached 377 miles of which 161 miles are on the Island of Hong Kong, 136 miles in Kowloon and New Kowloon and 80 miles in the New Territories.
18. The total water consumption for the same three years, viz. 1911, 1921 and 1931, was 2,089 million gallons, 3,860 million gallons and 6,001 million gallons, whilst the revenue from waterworks for 1913 was $404,220, for 1921 $669,400 and for 1931 $1,714,000.
19. The Revenue from Land Sales for the years 1911, 1921 and 1931 was $271,804, $1,634,097 and $3,192,551 respectively, the largest annual revenue derived from this source was in 1923 when a sum of $3,498,624 was realized.
20. The Census figures for the civilian population of Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories including the floating population were 456,739 in 1911, 625,166 in 1921 and 840,473 in 1931.
21. The following is a short summary of the principal works completed and in progress during the year:-
BUILDINGS.
22. The following works were completed during the year:— A Printing Shop at Victoria Gaol; additional Servants' Quarters, new Garage and sundry alterations to "Lysholt"; the formation of a Car Park at Queen's Gardens; Quarters for Wireless Operators at Victoria Peak; Vaccination Centre at the Harbour Office: Latrine and Bathhouse on Praya East; Latrine and Urinal at Davis Street (30 seats); block of six flats for Married Warders at Lai Chi Kok Prison; Kowloon Tong Market; School at Un Long; and Quarters for Forestry Reserve, Tai Po.
