Sheet Nos. 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 23 and 24 of the 20 map were published during 1929 and it is expected that the remainder will be ready during 1930.

(3) The area surveyed and revised in Victoria and Hong Kong during the year was 225 acres of which 173 acres was plotted to scale.

In Kowloon and New Territories during the same period the area surveyed was 425 acres and 512 acres was plotted.

The number of sheets taken up in Hong Kong during the year scale was 29. 58 tracings on linen size 36″ × 26″ were made and 42 sheets were reduced to scale.

In Kowloon and New Kowloon 13 sheets were taken up-scale.

(4) The eight beacons on Lantau Island referred to in the 1928 report have now been connected with the main triangulation. This work is now complete.

LEVELLING.

The preliminary work which commenced in August consisted of running a series of Levels from Cosmopolitan Dock to Hung Hom Dock. The Cosmopolitan Dock tide gauge was eventually adopted as the basis for calculation of M.S.L. from analysis of hourly tidal readings taken over a period of one year. The readings will continue to be analysed and a true M.S.L. finally determined and necessary corrections applied.

The instruments in use are Cooke, Troughton and Simms Self Checking Level, Telescope Power 30.

The staves used are portable "Gayer" Staves graduated to 0.01 of a foot. During the levelling these staves were checked against a steel tape.

During 1929 milestones carrying B.Ms. were fixed on Nathan and Taipo Roads and on the circular road round the New Territories.

These stones started from 1 or 553 M.S.L. on Nathan Road and proceeded northwards along Nathan and Taipo Roads till the 3 or 534 M.S.L. on Taipo Road where the route forks to form a circular road round the New Territories a distance of 50.1 miles.
