130. Bowen Road, Filter Beds-Conversion. This work was referred to in paragraph 149 of last year's Report.

Despite recent extensions to the filtration plant of the City, the filtering area is still considerably less than what it should be.

The present daily consumption of the City fluctuates between 8 and 10 million gallons and the existing filter beds (including the Eastern Filter Beds which are not yet completed) are not capable of satisfactorily dealing with more than 8 million gallons per day.

In view of further development, particularly on the Praya East Reclamation, it was decided to convert the existing Bowen Road slow sand filters which had a daily capacity of 2/3 million gallons into a fast gravity unit capable of dealing with 3 million gallons per day.

Information was obtained through the Crown Agents from well-known manufacturers of mechanical filtration plant in England and a tender from the Paterson Engineering Company Ltd. amounting to £8,958.6.0. was accepted for the supply and erection of the necessary plant.

By the end of the year, good progress had been made by Messrs. Paterson's erector, who arrived in the Colony early in November.

A Contract for the construction of the foundations and buildings, amounting to $22,055.25, was let to the Hong Kong Excavation, Pile Driving and Construction Co., Ltd. in May and good progress was maintained up to the close of the year.
