The following are particulars of the additional areas laid with improved surfacing during the year:--
Tarring and sanding, Square Yards. 46,171
2" granolithic paving slabs laid on footways, 1,423
88. Maintenance of Telephones.-The lines and instruments were maintained in good order.
A telephone was installed in a Police Call Hut at Kowloon-Tong.
89. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs &c.--The sewers, stormwater drains, and trained nullahs were cleansed, repaired and maintained in good condition, the open channels and nullahs being cleansed by the Sanitary Department. Sand deposits as they accumulated were removed.
All metal work in connection with the drainage systems was inspected, and, where found necessary, repaired and tarred.
The details of expenditure under this heading were as follows:

90. Electric Lighting.-The number of electric lamps in use at the end of the year, all of which are incandescent, was 170,
91. Maintenance of Chinese Cemeteries.-No work was carried out under this heading during the year.

92. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages.-The rainstorms and typhoons of July and September did considerable damage at Laichikok Prison causing the collapse of a large portion of fencing and boundary wall.
The rainstorms caused numerous landslips and badly scoured the road surfaces where not treated with asphaltum. At Waterloo Road Extension to foothills the road surface was badly scoured and a slip occurred in the cutting. One bamboo...
