Annexe L.

PORT DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT.

The activities of this Department to the close of 1924 were reported upon in Annexe L which was attached to the Report of the Director of Public Works for 1924 as the accounting work of the new department, which was created as stated in the Annexe on the 14th August, 1924, was not separated from the Public Works Department until the new year.

In May Mr. John Duncan retired from the Service on the ground of ill-health, and was succeeded by Mr. Robert Baker. At the close of the year, the Government decided that the department should revert to the control of the Director of Public Works, and arrangements to that effect were accordingly made.

The savings appearing under (i) were due to a variety of causes, such as the abolition of Personal Allowance to the Port Engineer, and to the lapsing salaries of 1 Assistant Engineer, 2 1st Class Overseers, 1 Class I Clerk, 2 Class IV Clerks, 2 Class V Clerks, and certain messengers, whose appointments were not filled, and to savings under Conveyance Allowances, Transport and Travelling Expenses, Electric light and fans, etc.

Savings under (ii) are accounted for by the suspension of Harbour Surveys, and the decision to defer purchase of filing cabinets.

Details of (iii) are given below in the Statement of Expenditure on Port Works Extraordinary.

Item (iv) is exclusive of Salaries and Supervision; the same remark applies to (v) with the exception of certain minor supervision charges.
