119. Sanitary Coolie Quarters at Wanchai.-This work was referred to in paragraph 100 of last year's report.
The quarters consist of two blocks at the back of the Sanitary Department Eastern Office. Each block is 117 feet long and 19 feet wide. The Front Block has 3 floors and a basement, the two upper floors of same contain in each iron bunks for 58 coolies, a foreman's room, and 2 urinals. The ground floor contains a Mess Room, Kitchen, and quarters for 2 head foremen. The basement contains a large Store, Bath Room, Drying Room, Boiler Room, and Latrine.
The Rear Block comprises dormitories, and consists of 3 floors, each provided with 58 iron bunks, a foreman's room and 2 urinals.
The two blocks thus contain accommodation for 290 coolies, 10 foremen, and 2 head foremen.
Access is obtained to the premises from Wanchai Gap Road and to the upper floors by concrete stairs in the yard between the two blocks. The buildings are of Canton red brick, cement plastered outside and have concrete floors and roofs. Electric light is provided.
The buildings were completed and occupied during the year,

It was originally intended to erect a block of Quarters upon a vacant site adjoining Pound Lane and Upper Station Street, but after careful consideration it was decided that, owing to the nature of the ground and the existing old retaining wall, it was not suitable to accommodate a large building.
