mileage 75.-The roads generally were maintained in a satisfactory manner.

The following are particulars of the additional areas laid with improved surfacing during the year:-

87. Maintenance of Telephones.-The lines and instruments were maintained in good order. Four new telephones were installed.

Alarm bell systems were installed in six Police Stations.

Wooden poles were replaced by iron ones on the various routes and old G.I. wire renewed.

The telephones and electric signalling apparatus on the British Section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway were maintained in good condition.

88. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, &c.-The sewers, stormwater drains, trained nullahs and concrete channels, were cleansed, repaired and maintained in good condition.

On account of the high tenders received for the Annual Maintenance Contract of 1925, the whole of the maintenance of sewers, nullahs, etc., was carried out departmentally.
