79. Maintenance of Chinese Cemeteries.—The work carried out under this heading has been alluded to in paragraph 37 of this report.
1925 Estimate 1925 Expenditure
$1,000.00 $109.77
80. Maintenance of Recreation Grounds. Very little expenditure was incurred under this heading, as the new lay-out of King's Park for general recreation purposes was started early in the year.
81. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages.—Heavy rains which fell in July and August caused damage to Tokwawan Nullah.
In addition small wash-outs occurred at:
Kowloon Hospital Site, approach road; Waterloo Road Extension; Kowloon City-Mongkoktsui Road, Section II; Chatham Road Extension.
A length of Boundary Wall at the Laichikok Prison, which collapsed, was rebuilt.
The surfaces of roads treated with asphaltum suffered to a small extent only, but practically the whole of the ordinary macadamized roads had to be repaired owing to scour.
Owing to scour, several breaches were made in the path to Kaulungtong necessitating the erection of bamboo bridges.
A toe-wall, and filling to slope were necessary to support the road at Laichikok Hill where a landslide occurred.
82. Maintenance of Waterworks.—A constant supply of water was maintained in all districts throughout the year, with the exception of the month of March, when, owing to the low state of the reservoir, a restricted supply was resorted to. A 6 hours' supply to the whole peninsula was given daily, with an additional 2 hours' supply to the district lying South of Gascoigne and Austin Roads. Fortunately the heavy rains of late March enabled a full supply to be turned on from 1st April.
The total quantity supplied was 818.78 million gallons giving an average daily consumption of 2.24 million gallons or 14.8 gallons per head per day, taking an estimated population of 150,580.
Details are given in Annexe H.
The quantity of water stored in the impounding reservoir on the 1st January amounted to 282.73 million gallons and it reached a minimum on the 14th June when it amounted to 128.87 million gallons. The reservoir was at or above its permanent overflow level from 16th July to 21st September on various dates.
