Infectious Diseases in the Colony.

Rabies.

Dogs remain unmuzzled. Throughout the year several suspicious outbreaks of what at first appeared to be Rabies occurred. It proved however on investigation that these cases were not Rabies but Hysteria, etc.

44

At the beginning of October, however, a case of Rabies occurred in the Hill District of the Island. This proved to be the forerunner of a mild outbreak which—it is to be hoped—is now over. Three other foci have been discovered up to the end of the year.

From the evidence at hand, it would appear possible that the cause of this outbreak has been a dog which started from some point on Praya East and following a zig-zag course, crossed the Island biting and infecting other animals which it met en route. Public alarm was caused at the outset through the unfortunate death from Rabies of a man who had been bitten by the first case of the series. This alarm was not altogether groundless and has ensured the co-operation of the public which is so valuable in dealing with such a disease as Rabies. During the year legislation has been passed prohibiting the importation into the Colony of dogs from Canton and Shameen and prohibiting—except with the written permission of the Colonial Veterinary Surgeon—movement of dogs between the Island and other parts of the Colony.

Ninety-two animals were kept under observation for Rabies against 45 in 1923. Five specimens were sent direct to the Government Bacteriologist for microscopical examination. Of the above animals 72 were returned to owners, 7 still remain under observation, 9 died or were destroyed for cause other than Rabies, and the carcases of 3 are still under examination by the Government Bacteriologist.

Rinderpest.

Three outbreaks occurred during the year as against the same number in 1923. In all 13 cases occurred of which 7 were fatal.

Pleuro-Pneumonia Contagiosa.

No outbreaks.

Anthrax.

One case occurred during the year.

Glanders.

No outbreaks as against 5 in 1923.

Foot and Mouth Disease.

No outbreaks.
