The Police force.-The total number of admittances to hospital was 1431 (994 in 1922). Malaria, almost exclusively of the subtertian type, accounted for no less than 344 admissions.
The attached list shows the incidence of malaria as compared with other diseases and as modified by nationality.

No attempt has been made to estimate proportionate sickness-rates as the very considerable number of re-admissions would vitiate such statistics.
The incidence of malaria, even allowing for re-admission, among the Chinese is very high as compared with last year and indeed with many past years and is, I think, entirely due to the great prevalence of this disease among the police recruited from Wei-hai-wei. These men occupy for the most part stations which are admittedly malarious but no such returns for malaria have been noted among the former inhabitants, at least in recent years,
One is rather inclined to think that the Kwan Tung Chinese are more immune to the parasite than their Northern cousins.
One of these Northerns died from black water fever which is a rare condition in Hongkong, and, as far as I know, only met with among non-Chinese in this Colony. No comment need be made concerning the other conditions as they were ordinary complaints and not of special novelty or interest.
