28. On all Railways, a knowledge of First Aid to the Injured is desirable, if not imperative, and in July of this year lectures to the staff were inaugurated. We are fortunate in having as Traffic Inspector an ex Royal Navy man who is well versed in this most useful subject and he conducted the classes under the direction of the Railway Medical Officer.
Examinations were held at the end of the year with most excellent results, four men being awarded merit badges.
It is most gratifying to know that throughout the line we now have trained officers qualified, in cases of accident or sudden illness, to arrest bleeding and render that skilled assistance before the arrival of a doctor which so often means the saving of life.
Staff.
29. During my absence on leave from 19th June to 17th October, Mr. Robert Baker, Engineer of Way and Works, acted as Manager.
Mr. A. S. MacKichan, Assistant Engineer, resigned on 30th September, and on May 18th, Mr. W. G. Clark, Traffic Assistant, left by the Empress of Russia to join His Majesty's Forces.
Mr. C. D. Lambert, Locomotive Superintendent, and Mr. W. S. Cuff, Guard, were absent on Active Service during the whole of the year.
Mr. C. J. Roe was transferred to the Imports and Exports Office on 1st May, and Mr. H. W. Hammond was appointed temporarily Traffic Inspector at Kowloon Station on 15th July.
