A portion of it, 600 feet in length, crosses a tidal flat on an embankment, 9 feet high, faced on the outer side with rubble masonry set in lime and cement mortar, whilst another portion, 200 feet in length, has been excavated through a solid mass of rock.

By the close of the year, 2,700 cubic yards of rock and 12,000 cubic yards of earth and decomposed granite had been excavated, whilst the embankment already mentioned had been completed.
