the Treasury give their sanction to the arrangements under which it is suggested to detail an epidemiologist from the Medical Department of the Local Government Board for work with the Commission, this Department will be willing to bear its share in the expense involved.

I am to add that the further proposals contained in the letter under reply in regard to the financial arrangements to be made in connection_with the investigations are concurred in.

In the circumstances represented by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton in Mr. Lucas's letter of the 8th instant (18916/1904),* the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury give their covering sanction for the grant of a contribution of £100 per annum for 5 years by the Colony of Fiji towards the proposed Fund for the investi- gation and prevention of malaria and other tropical diseases.

Gibraltar, June 10, 1904. In reply to your despatch, No. 44, of the 28th ultimo, on the subject of the appointment of Major W. H. Horrocks, M.B., R.A.M.C., to be a member of a Com- mission to investigate the question of Mediterranean fever, I have the honour to inform you that the Sanitary Commissioners have no objection to Major Horrocks having such leave as may be necessary, on full pay, but they do not see their way to allow a further salary to his locum tenens.

2. Major Horrocks, having made satisfactory arrangements for the performance of his duties as Health Officer and Inspector of Food, has left this day for Malta.

Admiralty, June 17, 1904. I AM commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to acquaint you, with reference to your letter of the 13th June, 1904,† No. 19824, on the subject of the financial arrangements in connection with the proposed enquiry into Mediter- ranean fever, that they concur in the proposals as set forth in that letter, including the employment of the epidemiologist.

My Lords understand that Mr. Lyttelton will make the necessary arrangements with the Royal Society and will obtain the sanction of the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury to the financial arrangements connected with the investigation. In communicating with the Treasury it is requested that it may be stated that, so far as Naval Votes are concerned, the expenditure connected with the enquiry can be met out of the aggregate of Vote 3.

My Lords note that their concurrence will be sought before any expenditure of

an extraordinary or unusual nature is incurred.

I am to add that they would be glad at an early date to learn the number of in- vestigators and, if possible, to be furnished with an approximate estimate of the cost of the investigation as requested in their letter of the 5th April.
