4. The Lords Commissioners of the Treasury are being asked to contribute from Imperial funds a sum of £500 a year for five years on behalf of the Exchequer-aided Colonies and Protectorates.
5. The constitution of the Board to advise the Secretary of State as to the disposal of the fund has not yet been settled, but the matter is under consideration, and a further communication will be addressed to you on the subject.
6. If Mr. Brodrick shares the views of his predecessor, Mr. Lyttelton would gladly avail himself of the offer made in the India Office letter of the 29th of July, 1903, to recommend the subject to the Indian Government for favourable considera- tion, and, as the latter might desire to have some indication of what amounts are being contributed by the Colonies, which are neither Exchequer-aided nor included among the Colonies which are stated to be giving, in addition to their contributions, considerable assistance indirectly to the objects in view, he would mention that the Colonies mentioned below have promised the following yearly contributions for five
years:-

MR. LYTTELTON to ACTING GOVERNOR MOSELEY.
Downing Street, June 9, 1904.
I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 180, of the 5th of May, † and to express my appreciation of the readiness with which the Legislative Council of Lagos have agreed to an annual contribution of £150 for five years to the fund referred to in the last paragraph of my predecessor's circular despatch of the 28th of May, 1903. ‡

no expense would thereby be thrown upon the Local Government Board. The place of the absent medical officer would doubtless require to be temporarily filled up, and remuneration, at the rate of £500 per annum provided for the substitute. As the expenses of the investigation are to be shared by the three Departments above-men- tioned, this remuneration would be paid by them.
I am, &c.,
To the President of the
Local Government Board.
GENTLEMEN,
Enclosure 2 in No. 100.
ARCH. GEIKIE,
Secretary, Royal Society.
Local Government Board, Whitehall, S.W., June 9, 1904.
I AM directed by the Local Government Board to advert to Sir A. Geikie's letter of the 3rd instant. and to state, for the information of the Royal Society, that they are willing that one of their Medical Inspectors, Dr. Ralph William Johnstone, should undertake the epidemiological work in connexion with the proposed investi- gation of Malta fever by the Royal Society, provided that suitable arrangements are made as to travelling and subsistence expenses (which should be paid to him and which the Board assume will be ordinary first class fares and 30s. a day), and as to the repayment to the Board of the salary of a temporary Inspector at the rate of £500 a year during Dr. Johnstone's absence. The Board should be informed by whom these payments will be made. They do not propose that Dr. Johnstone's absence from his duties here should extend beyond three months.
The Board direct me to add that the sanction of the Treasury is necessary to the employment of the temporary Inspector, and they are accordingly applying for this. They are also sending a copy of this letter to the Colonial Office, the War Office, and the Admiralty.

SIR,
(Received June 11, 1904.)
[Answered by No 116.]
The Palace, Valletta, June 6, 1904.
WITH reference to my despatch, No. 98, of the 1st instant,* and previous corre- spondence regarding the investigation of Mediterranean Fever, I have the honour to inform you that, in compliance with your instructions, arrangements have been made for relieving Dr. Zammit of his ordinary duties for the time during which the Commission will sit, and endeavours are being made to secure a suitable house for the Commission.
2. Dr. Zammit reports that the following additional apparatus, which cannot be supplied from the Public Health Laboratory, will be required, as the work pro- gresses, viz.:-
SIR,
Enclosure 1 in No. 100.
Burlington House, London, W., June 3, 1904. Ar the conjoint request of the Colonial Office, the Admiralty, and the War Office, the Royal Society has undertaken an investigation of Malta fever. As it is desirable to make a thorough enquiry into this important and difficult subject, the President and Council are of opinion that with as little delay as possible the services of an experienced observer should be secured who would undertake the epidemiological work which will obviously be required. I am, therefore, directed to ask whether you would be willing that the medical branch of your Department should lend one of its skilled officers for this purpose. It would be understood that if this proposal is granted

As there is no provision in the Estimates for this service, I suggest that the cost be charged to the £1,000 reserved for Civil Contingencies under the Civil List, on the understanding that all the expenses of the Commission shall, in the end, be equally shared by the Naval and Military Authorities and the Government of Malta.
