WITH further reference to your letter of December 16th, 1905,* I am directed by the Senate to ask you to convey to the Secretary of State for the Colonies their cordial thanks for his further contribution of £50 a year for five years to the funds of the Chair of Protozoology.
The Senate greatly appreciate the additional assistance which the Secretary of State has given to the University in this matter.
With reference to your question as to the date at which the first instalment of the grant should be paid to the University, I am directed to say that it would be convenient if it could be paid in as early as possible after April 1st, when our financial year begins.

142, Queen Victoria Street, London, E.C., March 22, 1906. I HAVE the honour to inform you that I have received a despatch from my Government informing me that at the Conference of Premiers held at Hobart in February last it was agreed:-
That the Federal Government be requested to provide an annual grant of £200 for five years towards scientific inquiry by the Imperial autho- rities into tropical diseases.
The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth now intimates that the first instal- ment of the amount has been voted by the Federal Parliament, and the sum has been paid into the Treasury of Victoria for femittance to London.
I shall be prepared to pay over the sum in question on receipt of instructions from you in the matter.

WITH reference to your predecessor's general despatch of the 10th August last, respecting the Commonwealth contribution of £200 per annum for a period of five years towards the fund for promoting scientific inquiry into tropical diseases, I have the honour, at the instance of my Prime Minister, to inform Your Lordship that the first annual instalment of the grant has been appropriated by Parliament, and that the Agent-General for Victoria has been invited to make the payment of the sum of £200 to the Colonial Office§ for the purpose specified.
