An examination of the various items of which the above table is composed reveals the following facts:-

LIVING ANIMALS.

The changes in each case are mainly accounted for by alterations in the values of the exports of horses.

FOOD AND DRINK.

The following exports to European countries show alterations.

Corn an increase-

of £453,000, fish of £1,295,000, and spirits of £146,000. Butter has decreased by The increase to the United States £118,000, and sugar, pickles, &c., by £559,000.

is mainly accounted for by spirits £294,000, fish £202,000, and potatoes £247,000.. The exports which chiefly account for the increase to Other Countries are corn, &c. £185,000, and spirits £114,000.

RAW MATERIALS.

Coal shows the following increases :-Europe £13,000,000, United States £450,000, and Other Countries £3,100,000. Clay, grease and tallow have increased in value, The exports of clay and wool to the but the export of wool to Europe has fallen off. United States have increased in value.

YARNS AND TEXTILES.

Cotton. The total export to Europe has fallen from fifteen to twelve and a-half millions (yarn £2,780,000 and piece goods about £400,000), but the exports of thread have increased. The export to the United States has risen from £2,226,000 to nearly £3,682,000. This increase occurs in piece goods, lace, and yarn, other heads having fallen off. The export of yarn to Other Countries has fallen off about £650,000, but piece goods have risen in value from 218,200,000 to £22,400,000. Hosiery shows a. decrease, but the exports of lace have increased.

Jute. The exports to Europe have fallen off £360,000; a fall which is, however, counterbalanced by increases to the United States and to Other Countries.

Linen. The exports to Europe and Other Countries have fallen off £424,000 and £239,000 respectively; but an increase is shown in the case of the United States to the extent of £700,000, chiefly in plain piece goods and unenumerated manufactures.

Silk. A decrease to Europe of £248,000 is apparent, and of £348,000 to the United States. On the other hand the exports to Other Countries have risen £44,000.

Wool.-There is a general decrease under this head, the exports having fallen in the case of Europe from £12,449,000 to £9,785,000, to the United States from £3,219,000 to £1,512,000, and to Other Countries from £3,451,000 to £2,967,000. The decreases appear fairly general over nearly all classes of goods. (See note on increase of wool flock to Europe under heading "All Other Manufactures.")

Metals and Manufactures.

Europe :-The increase is mainly in Iron and Steel, the rise being from £4,739,345. to £6,586,327. Implements and tools, copper, tin and lead also show increases.

United States The exports of copper rose, but hardware and cutlery fell in value. Telegraph wires rose from £18,000 to £388,000, but, the exports of iron and steel fell from £4,195,000 to £3,781,000.

Other Countries:-Iron and steel exports increased by £2,000,000, and the exports of telegraph wires from £399,000 to £577,000. -

It may be pointed out that exports of tin plates and plates for tinning were responsible for an increase of £1,800,000 to Europe, but on the other hand the same. exports to the United States fell off to a greater extent.

Machinery and Mill WorK.

1

The export of steam enginee shows a decrease generally, the exports to the United Stains and to Other Countries haying fallen off some £160,000. The increases under the head "Not being Steam Enginas" were as follows :-£2,700,000 to Europe, #110,000

9

to the United States, and £1,000,000 to Other Countries. The export of sewing machines to Europe increased by £1,250,000.

APPAREL.

There are no notable changes under this head though general decreases are apparent.

CHEMICALS.

The exports of chemicals, &c., to Europe and to Other Countries have increased by about £1,000,000 in each case, but the export to the United States has, on the other hand, decreased by a nearly similar amount. Dye stuffs show a decrease generally, but the exports of manure and medicines have increased. It is difficult, however, to satisfactorily compare the exports under this head, because the classification differs so widely in the two years under consideration.

ALL OTHER MANUFACTURES.

Here again an examination is rendered almost nugatory by the wide differences in classification adopted in the two years. The export of bags and sacks has decreased, but books and candles show increases. The export of carriages has increased under all Coal products three heads, but a general decrease is shown in the exports of cement. to Europe and the United States, and oil to the United States and Other Countries have increased. Skins and furs show an increase generally.

The following table and remarks are also appended in order to indicate the various changes which have taken place in the total export trade to Foreign Countries, in com- parison with the changes in the same trade with British Possessions :-
