COMPARISON WITH TRADE TO BRITISH POSSESSIONS.

The value of the exports of coal to the Colonies in the year 1902 was £2,114,579, and in 1885, £1,673,677—an increase of £440,902, which is somewhat less than the increase during the same period in the exports of coal to the United States. The value of the export trade to British Possessions, excluding coal, ships, &c., was £103,916,065 in 1902 and £76,255,949 in 1885-an increase of £27,660,116 or 36*2 per cent.

The following table will serve to compare the percentage of the total exports, including and excluding coal, sent to the Protected States of Europe, to the United States, to Other Countries, and to British Possessions :-

turned against the foreigner and in favour of the Colonies to the extent of £11,317,000- the Colonial increase being £27,660,116 against a Foreign increase of £16,343,302.

Turning to the various heads and sub-heads into which the Returns are divided, the following table shows what proportion of the value of the exports under each head was sent to Europe (excluding Turkey), the United States, Other Countries, and British Possessions in the years 1902 and 1885; so far as it is possible to make a useful comparison.

The above table shows that, excluding coal, the exports of the United Kingdom to the Protected Countries of Europe have, in the period under review, fallen from 31.3 per cent. to 278 per cent. of the total export trade of the United Kingdom. The trade to the United States is now 9-4 per cent. of the whole instead of 10.7 per cent. as in 1885. The trade to all Other Countries has risen from 20.3 per cent. to 20.7 per cent, and to British Possessions from 37:7 per cent. to 42 per cent.

iw The increase to Other Countries is 23.8 per cent, and to British Possessions 36.2 per cent., while the increase per cent. to the Protected States of the world is but 7.7 per cent. (This calculation, moreover, favours the Colonies but little, being made in their case on a total of £76,250,000 and in the case of the Protected Countries on a total of £85,000,000.) The increase shown in the export trade to all Foreign Countries is only 13 per cent., while the increase in the same trade with British Possessions is 36.2 per cent. ed obru obat 1400 งา

E Aggregates. The aggregate increase to Protected Countries was only £6,589,284, but the export trade to British Possessions increased by £27,660,116 and to Other Countries by £9,804,018: and in 1902 the value of the export trade of the United Kingdom, excluding coal, ships, &c., to British Possessions was £103,916,063, to Protected Countries £91,569,091, and to Other Countries £50,929,611.

The export trade to all Foreign Countries, including coal but not ships or parcel post, showed an increase in the aggregate of £82,850,000 against an increase in the same trade to British Possessions of £98,101,000—a balance in favour of the foreigner of about 84,750,000, When, however, the exports of coal are deducted, the balance of increase is
