PART I.

Description of the Service.

1. The Malayan Medical Service includes the qualified European personnel of the Medical Departments of the STRAITS SETTLEMENTS, the FEDERATED MALAY STATES (Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, and Pahang), the UNFEDERATED MALAY STATES (Johore, Kedah, Kelantan, and Trengganu), and the Malay State of BRUNEI in Borneo.

There is a common roster for promotion. Officers are liable to be transferred to any administration, though they are generally posted to the STRAITS SETTLEMENTS or FEDERATED MALAY STATES in the first instance.

"Time scale posts (see Part II, paragraph 1) in the UN- FEDERATED MALAY STATES and BRUNEI are usually filled by officers seconded from the STRAITS SETTLEMENTS.

Qualification of Candidates.

2. Applicants for appointments as Medical Officers or Medical Officers of Health in the Malayan Medical Service must be British subjects of European parentage and between 22 and 35 years of age. They must possess a double qualification and be on the British Medical Register. Preference will be given to candidates who have held hospital or public health appointments or who have special knowledge of anaesthetics, radiology, surgery, medicine, ophthal- mology, gynaecology and midwifery, diseases of the ear, nose, and throat, venereal diseases, &c.

Mode of Application for Appointment.

3. Applications for appointments must be addressed to the Private Secretary (Appointments), 2, Richmond Terrace, Whitehall, S.W.1. A request for a form of application should ordinarily be addressed in writing direct to the Private Secretary (Appointments).

A candidate resident in a Colony or Dominion should, however, submit his request to the Governor (in the case of a Colony) or appropriate authority (in that of a Dominion) and not to the Private Secretary (Appointments).

4. The candidate must fill in the form with full particulars re- garding his career and qualifications and the nature of the employ- ment he desires. He must name on the form two referees who will answer from personal knowledge for his character and capacity; and he must return it to the Private Secretary (Appointments)-
