We have received the enclosed telegram from Dr. Stephens, and Sir Michael Foster thinks the matter so important that we are summoning a meeting of the Malaria Committee for Monday afternoon next at 4. In the meantime he wishes to telegraph to Dr. Christophers as follows:-

Blantyre, June 15. Christophers and self have reported too few available cases here for adequate study and wish not to prolong stay beyond August. We are most anxious for sufficient hospital accommodation, not existent here. Daniels dissents from this view. Dr. Stephens.

I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to acknowledge the receipt of letter of the 14th of April,* and to inform you that he approves of you and your colleagues drawing maintenance allowance at the rate of £125 per annum instead of £100 per annum from the date of arrival at Blantyre to the date of departure from British Central Africa, but the additional £25 per annum will be treated for the present as an advance. Mr. Chamberlain also approves of the maximum limit of expenditure which may be incurred without special authority on a single expedition being raised from £10 to £20, and the Foreign Office will be asked to communicate with Her Majesty's Commissioner for the British Central Africa Protectorate with regard to the payment of the increased rates.
2. In the meantime you will have received the telegram from this Department of the 21st instant, informing you that the Malaria Investigation Committee approve of Dr. Stephens and Dr. Christophers leaving for this country either at once or as soon as they think desirable, with the view of proceeding inmediately to West Africa; and asking you to use your discretion as to prolonging your own stay. It is presumed that you will in due course send a full report on the matter.
3. The reports on cases of Blackwater Fever to which you referred in the 6th paragraph of your letter, seem to have been sent to the Royal Society, but at present they cannot be traced.

WITH reference to your despatch No. 266 of the 25th November last, I have the honour to inform you that the Council of Government, at a meeting held on the 23rd instant, voted a contribution of £150, to be paid in one instalment, towards the establishment of a School of Tropical Medicine in London and the institution of a Malaria Investigation Commission.
2. I enclose a copy of the Report of the Finance Committee which was adopted by the Council.
