CHAPTER XXIV.-

-VIOLENCE.

242.—Definition of Robbery.

Robbery is stealing accompanied with actual violence, or threats of violence to any person or property, used with intent to extort the property stolen, or to prevent or overcome resistance to its being stolen.

243.--Punishment for Robbery.

Any person who commits robbery, or who assaults any person with intent to commit a robbery, is guilty of felony, and is liable to flogging.

He is liable to penal servitule for life and flogging if—

(1) immediately after or before the robbery he inflicts any actual bodily injury on, or disfigures any person; or

(2) he commits the robbery, or assaults any person with intent to rob, together with one or more other person or persons; or

(3) he is armed with any offensive weapon or instru- ment, when he robs or assaults with intent to rob.

244.-Demanding with Intent to Steal.

Any person who with menaces demands from any person, either for himself or for any other person, anything capable of 24 & 25 V. being stolen with intent to steal it, is guilty of felony.

245.—Extortion by Threats of Accusation."

Any person who, with intent to extort or gain anything from any person, or to compel any person to execute, make, accept, endorse, alter, or destroy, the whole or any part of any valuable security, or to write, impress, or affix any name or seal upon any paper or parchment, in order that it may be afterwards made, or converted into, or used, or dealt with as a valuable security-

(1) accuses or threatens to accuse any person of any offence; or

(2) threatens that any person shall be accused by any other person of any offence; or

(3) causes any person to receive any document con- taining any such accusation or threat as aforesaid, knowing the contents of such document,

is guilty of felony.

And if such offence is any of the following, namely—

(a) any offence punishable with death or penal servitude for life, or any attempt to commit such an offence;

(b) buggery, or committing any act of gross indecency between mules, or having carnal knowledge of a woman who is an idiot or imbecile, or an assault with intent to commit a rape, or an indecent assault ; or
