On the 3rd instant I received an answer from my Government (see Enclosure 3), and I accordingly communicated a copy thereof to Mr. B. W. Levy, of the firm of Messrs. TELEGRAM.
[See No. 35: Answered by No. 71]
Ceylon contingent, 125 men, 5 officers, and establishment complete, armed with Lee-Metford magazine rifles, 500 rounds of ammunition Mark II., mounted, nearly all on trained horses, will sail for Cape Town in two detachments, first on 25th January, second on or about 7th February. At a meeting of Australians held at the Bank of New South Wales, London, to consider what steps could be taken here to help in the despatch of further mounted men from the Colonies, and it being understood that the Imperial Government would accept of such, it was resolved: "That cables should be sent to the several Governments to ascertain how many such men could be obtained, and to assure the Governments of the hearty co-operation of this meeting in supporting such action.”
