In 1901 the Crown Colonies produced about 4 per cent. of the world's supply of rubber, while by 1913 they were producing about two-fifths of the total. In 1915 the production of the Crown Colonies was practically double what it was in 1913, so to-day it is probable that the Crown Colonies are producing over two-thirds of the world's supply.
There has probably never been such rapid relative and absolute progress in the production of any raw material. It is the direct result of the flow of capital to the right quarters.
As in the case of many other products, accurate information is not available to make an exact comparison between the relative progress of our Crown Colonies and that of Foreign Countries.
SUGAR.
Production of Sugar in the principal Exporting Countries.
Where production figures are not available domestic exports are given, and in such cases the countries are marked with an asterisk,
The world's production of gold in 1898 (the year before the Boer War) was 13,878,000 fine ounces, and by 1912 it had grown to 22,349,000 ounces.
The British Empire's production (treating the Transvaal as part of the British Empire) was 8,178,000 ounces in 1898, or 59 per cent., while in 1912 it was 14,140,000 ounces, or just over 60 per cent.
There is no need to emphasize the economic importance of the dominant position of the Empire in the matter of gold production.
In the Crown Colonies the total production is about 5 per cent. of the world's production, but in 1901 it was only about 2 per cent. If this relative rate of development continues, the Crown Colonies will, in the future, take a very important place in gold production.
RUBBER.

Where production figures are not available domestic exports are given, and in such cases the countries are marked with an asterisk.
